Not really a blog post this one but a bit of poetry that I wrote a long while back. I do talk about pilgrimage and myths a bit too...and what this means to me.
Maps
I've always loved maps.
Since I was a child.
Maybe it's my Sagittarian moon, dreaming of adventures in far off lands.
To be honest, most of my travelling has taken place in the Celtic parts of the British Isles.
Wales, my home country, Ireland and Scotland. Also, the Summer lands in England.
I've loved every minute of it for the Otherworld is never too far away.
Pilgrimage
What is a pilgrim?
For me it is about visiting physical sites related to myths.
Many years back in 1994 I hitch hiked to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northern Spain. One day I would like to walk the Camino and haven't ruled it out yet. I never had the time or money to do it back in those days. Thousands of people carry on the tradition every year and that Sagittarius moon of mine quite likes the idea of taking five weeks out to walk five hundred miles. Alas, money and time are still a problem but one can always hope.
However, I have found over the years that there are lots of places closer to home.
The British Isles is awash with mythical sites which have called out to me for many moons as I have followed my Celtic spiritual path.
I could list them all...but then what would I write about in some of my future posts?
Safe to say that they exist if you take the time to seek them out.
Seeking them out
Quite simply, the stories and myths of our amazing British Mystery Tradition will point one in the right direction. But remember...dogma has no place here...for myths are open to interpretation...singing sometimes different songs to those who embrace them.
For that is the way of it.
I have visited many of these places. One inspired the following poem. Difficult to get to...but well worth the journey. I would urge anyone who has an interest in spirituality to go there.
The finger points
I sat today and looked
Amazed at what I saw
I didn't see a fin
And I didn't see a paw
I glimpsed no stem nor leaf
But I may have spied a wing
And I wondered at the sight
Of the land where people sing
And I am left to ponder on a thought that's sure to linger
I must return again to where spirit points the finger
Thanks very much for taking the time to view this post. Below I have listed some potential reading that may guide you on your path as well as some other possible pointers.
The Travellers guide to Sacred Scotland by Marianna Lines
The Travellers guide to Sacred Ireland by Cary Meehan
The Travellers guide to Sacred England by John Michell
The Travellers guide to Fairy Sites by Janet Bord
Sacred Britain A guide to places that stir the soul by Martin Symington
Other pointers...
I believe we are all on our own individual spiritual journeys. What has been right for me, may not be right for others.
In the realms of the mythic we may all interpret things in different ways.
I have mentioned before that I am not averse to the idea of things like astrology, numerology and many other forms of readings.
I find that one can always glean something from such endeavors if open to the prospect.
Thank you once again for reading.
Get in touch via the contact page if you feel so inclined.
The best of wishes from me and enjoy your pilgrimages.
They will remember you.
